Quantum-inspired algorithm

We are seeking a highly qualified research scientist to join a collaborative project between Khalifa University (KU) and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII) aimed at bridging the gap between cutting-edge quantum computing technology and its real-life applications to nuclear technology. The successful candidate will be Affiliated with the Emirates Nuclear Technology Center (ENCT) at Khalifa University.

Applicaiton to CFD

Scope of the project:

The project consists of the development of quantum-inspired algorithms, for Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in view of applications to nuclear reactor simulations. The specific class of quantum-inspired methods on which we will focus is tensor networks. These solvers will be adapted toward the use of full-scale thermohydraulic applications to nuclear technology relevant to the APR14000 at the Barakah power plant.

Responsibilities:

  • Study and develop quantum-inspired algorithms for PDEs governing the fluid and thermal dynamics in relevant nuclear applications
  • Implement these algorithms in Python language
  • Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, or a related field, with Postdoctoral experience.
  • Strong background in partial differential equations (PDE) and their numerical approximation techniques.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience with high-performance computing and parallel processing (optional).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in the field of Tensor Train (Tensor Network), including related publications in peer-reviewed journals, is an asset.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in quantum computing are a plus
  • Knowledge and experience in computational fluid dynamics are appreciated

    Scope of the project:

    KU is seeking an experienced & highly motivated Research Scientist to work on a funded project to investigate and develop quantum- inspired type algorithms, for solving the neutron transport equation (NTE) in view of applications to nuclear reactor simulations. The specific class of quantum-inspired methods on which we will focus on is tensor networks. The successful Research Scientist will join a collaborative project with Technology Innovation Institute (TII) to develop and implement novel methods and solvers which will be adapted toward the use of full-scale reactor physics applications to nuclear technology relevant to the APR1400. As part of the project, the researcher will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities at the Emirates Nuclear Technology Center (www.ku.ac.ae/entc) and will get an opportunity to work alongside researchers/graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a wider team. This is a 3-year project (with possible extension), and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with leading research institutions in the UAE and contribute to the advancement of the nuclear-energy industry through the application of the developed solvers to reactor physics simulations.

    Job requirement

  • PhD from a reputable university in Nuclear Engineering or related discipline
  • Strong background in nuclear reactor physics and its related numerical techniques
  • Strong programming skills in Python
  • Experience with high-performance computing and parallel processing (optional)

    Inverse Modeling and Data assimilation

    The successful Research Scientist will join a collaborative project to develop and implement an operational forecasting system based on inverse modeling (and Data Assimilation) techniques for early emergency response management in the UAE. The project will focus on assessing emissions and providing medium-range dispersion forecasts to support real-time monitoring of atmospheric radionuclides at local, national, and regional scales. This is a 2-year project (with possible extension), and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with leading research institutions in the UAE and contribute to the advancement of the nuclear-energy industry through the application of inverse modeling techniques.   • Study and develop inverse modeling techniques for assessing radioactive releases during an accidental radiological situation
  • Implement these techniques in a software system designed to assess emissions and provide medium-range dispersion forecasts

  • Essential Criteria

  • Ph.D. from a reputable university in Data Assimilation, or Computational Mathematics/physics, Mathematical Modeling or a related discipline
  • At least four (4) years of post-doctoral research experience
  • Expert-level knowledge project subject area as evidenced by relevant publications and or patents
  • Strong programming skills in at least one programming language such as Python, C/C++, or Fortran
  • Experience in the field of atmospheric radioactive release assessment and emergency response management is a plus
  • Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • The proven ability to lead work on multiple tasks with competing demands and deadlines.
  • Ability to train and mentor students and support fellow researchers
  • Highly developed reasoning and problem-solving skills
